The $300 Serum You Just Inactivated
You spent $60 on a vitamin C serum. You spent $120 on a peptide night cream. You invested in a clinical-grade RF device. You use all three — often in the same evening session. Your routine feels comprehensive.
But here is what you may not realize: if you applied that vitamin C serum before your RF session, you almost certainly destroyed the active ingredients before they had any chance to work.
The order in which you use skincare products and beauty devices is not a suggestion. It is governed by hard biochemical constraints — pH, molecular weight, thermal stability, and transepidermal water loss. Get the order wrong, and you are not just wasting product. You are potentially creating skin irritation, reducing device conductivity, or causing active ingredients to degrade before absorption.

Why Order Matters: The Three Variables That Decide Everything
Before we get to the protocol, you need to understand the three variables that dictate whether a product should go before or after your device:
1. pH Stability
Most active ingredients have a narrow pH window where they remain stable and bioavailable. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) requires a pH below 3.5. Retinol works best at pH 5.5-6.0. When you apply RF or laser — both of which generate dermal heat — the local skin temperature rises by 2-5 degrees Celsius. This temperature increase accelerates chemical degradation. During: Reapply gel if it dries out. Dried gel = zero conductivity = wasted session.
After (immediately): Remove gel residue with lukewarm water. Apply a peptide serum or growth factor — the post-RF permeability window amplifies penetration of these large-molecule actives that normally struggle to cross the stratum corneum.
After (30 min): Apply a ceramide-rich moisturizer. RF generates heat that temporarily increases TEWL; ceramides help restore the lipid barrier.
Avoid: Vitamin C, retinol, AHAs/BHAs — these are heat-sensitive and/or too irritating for post-treatment skin. Wait until morning or at least 2 hours.
Microcurrent Protocol
Before: Cleanse thoroughly. Any residual oil, makeup, or silicone-based product acts as an electrical insulator. The probe must make direct contact with skin through a conductive water-based medium.
During: Use a proper conductive gel — not aloe vera, not ultrasound gel from Amazon (inconsistent conductivity), not a HA serum (too thick). The gel IS the electrical circuit.
After (immediately): Remove gel. Apply a HA serum while skin is still slightly damp — this locks in the post-device hydration boost. Follow with a peptide moisturizer.
Avoid: Any facial oil, balm, or heavy cream before microcurrent. They block the current entirely.
LED Mask Protocol
Before: Cleanse. LED is one of the few devices where you CAN apply certain serums before treatment. Because LED does not involve heat or electrical current, there is no degradation risk. In fact, applying a water-based antioxidant serum before red/NIR LED may have a synergistic effect — the LED stimulates cellular ATP while the antioxidant neutralizes free radicals generated by increased mitochondrial activity.
During: Wear the mask on clean skin or over a thin layer of water-based serum. The mask must be clean and dry on the outer surface.
After (immediately): Apply the rest of your skincare routine. The LED has primed your cells; now feed them with peptides, HA, and moisturizer.
Avoid: Oil-based products before LED — they create a barrier film that scatters light and reduces photon penetration.
Laser Protocol
Before: Cleanse and dry thoroughly. Laser treatment requires completely dry skin — no toner, no serum, no gel. Moisture on the skin surface can cause the laser energy to scatter or create uneven thermal distribution.
During: Nothing between the laser aperture and your skin.
After (immediately): Apply a cooling, fragrance-free aloe gel or a ceramide-based soothing cream. Laser generates microthermal zones that need immediate barrier support.
After (24 hours): Resume normal serums. Avoid retinol and exfoliating acids for at least 48 hours post-laser.
Ultrasonic Cavitation Protocol
